4,5-Diiodo-1H-imidazole is an imidazole derivative that has been shown to have a pesticide effect on marine sponges. This compound reacts with s-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase and blocks the formation of methylcobalamin. 4,5-Diiodo-1H-imidazole has also been shown to have antibacterial activity against E. coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus. 4,5-Diiodo-1H-imidazole inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis through inhibition of the enzyme methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT). The reaction rate is influenced by functional groups present in the molecule and by tautomers that exist between different forms of the compound.
