It has been shown to have a vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) stimulating effect on the human colon. This property may be due to its ability to bind to fatty acids and diacylglycerols in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to a change in membrane thickness. 1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-rac-glycerol sodiumsalt also has an asymmetrical structure with one hydrocarbon chain that is longer than the other. It is hydrated at room temperature and undergoes thermodynamic phase transition from liquid to solid at 36°C.
