1,5-Dibromo-2,4-dimethoxybenzene is a synthetic compound that has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth. It has been shown to be effective against prostate cancer cells. This compound inhibits the production of melanin, which is responsible for the pigmentation of skin and hair. It also inhibits the growth of cancer cell lines in culture by blocking DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. 1,5-Dibromo-2,4-dimethoxybenzene can be synthesized from esters and bromomethyl benzene via a three step process. The first step is the conversion of bromomethyl benzene into 2,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde via electrophilic aromatic substitution with bromine.
