4,6-Diamino-2-hydroxypyrimidine (4,6-DAHP) is a metabolite of the amino acid arginine and has been shown to have analgesic properties. It is a redox agent that can react with hydrogen ions to form reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl radicals. In the presence of mammalian tissue, 4,6-DAHP binds to the amide group in proteins, which can lead to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death. 4,6-DAHP also has been shown to inhibit pain models in rats by activating opioid receptors and suppressing release of proinflammatory cytokines. This compound may be useful for treating autoimmune diseases due its ability to activate growth factors such as transforming growth factor beta or epidermal growth factor.
