1,3-Dimethylbutylamine hydrochloride is a silicone that can be used in pharmaceuticals, molybdenum, and diagnostic applications. It is also used as an ingredient in metal-containing polymers. 1,3-Dimethylbutylamine hydrochloride is produced by the reaction of formamide with ammonium formate and isobutyl alcohol. The reaction mixture is heated to produce a white solid product which can then be purified by recrystallization or by washing with water. Impurities in this product are detected using sedimentation or monoxide tests. 1,3-Dimethylbutylamine hydrochloride has been shown to have a low degree of polyvinylpyrrolidone adsorption when mixed with polyester resins.
