This compound is a precursor to fluorenyl, which is used in organic synthesis. 9,9-Dimethyl-2-nitro-9H-fluorene has been shown to be useful as a spectroscopic reagent and as a device for preparation of other fluorenyl compounds. 9,9-Dimethyl-2-nitro-9H-fluorene is also thermally stable and has a transition temperature of about 120 degrees Celsius. This compound has been shown to be mesomeric with biphenyl.
