3,3'-Dimethyloxacarbocyanineiodide is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect the presence of leukocytes in the blood. It has been shown to bind to proteins in mammalian cells and can be used as a cross-linking agent for protein-protein interactions. 3,3'-Dimethyloxacarbocyanineiodide has also been shown to be an excellent absorber of chloride ions and have a hydroxyl group that reacts with phosphate groups on proteins. This probe is used in molecular modelling studies as an activator of polymerization reactions due to its high activation energy.
