5,7-Dimethoxyindan-1-one is an antibacterial drug that belongs to the group of synthetic heterocyclic compounds. It has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to DNA and RNA in a manner similar to that of the antibiotic tetracycline. This compound is synthesised by reacting 5,7-dimethoxy-2-chloroindane with carbon disulphide and hydrogen chloride in acidic conditions. Demethylation of the product followed by cyclodehydration leads to the final product, 5,7-dimethoxyindan-1-one. This compound also inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria through inhibition of ribosomal activity. The regulatory effect on this compound has not been established yet.
