It is one of the most common ingredients in pyrethrin, an insecticide derived from the flowers of chrysanthemums. 2-(2,4-Dimethylphenyl)acetic acid and its derivatives are used as substitutes for natural pyrethrins in commercial products. These substances are synthesised by reacting 2-methylphenol with acetic anhydride.
