2-[(2,4-Dimethylphenyl)sulfanyl]aniline is a synthetic drug substance that inhibits the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the replication of DNA and RNA, which is essential for bacterial growth. 2-[(2,4-Dimethylphenyl)sulfanyl]aniline also has genotoxic impurities, so it should be handled with caution. This active compound is used as a starting material in the synthesis of other antituberculous agents such as ethionamide, pyridoxine, and piperazine. The synthesis of this compound can be achieved by reacting ammonium formate with 2-(p-aminophenyl) sulfanilide.
