Descripción:2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)ethanol is a diluent that is used in the preparation of soil microorganisms for use in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of a number of different bacterial strains and can be used as an antibacterial agent when high concentrations are present. 2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)ethanol can also be used to maintain sulfate levels in nutrient solutions and as a long-lasting ester linkage in agarose gels. 2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)ethanol binds to sulfate ions at the expense of glutathione, which is required for sulfate assimilation. This inhibits the uptake of sulfate into bacteria cells, leading to starvation.
