Rifaximin is a pharmaceutical preparation that belongs to the group of rifamycins. It is used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and cancer. Rifaximin has been shown to be effective against inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting bacterial growth in the intestines. This drug also has an anti-inflammatory effect on polymorphonuclear leukocytes, which are eosinophilic cells involved in the immune response. Rifaximin also inhibits intestinal motility and fluid secretion, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-8). The use of this drug has been associated with a reduction in polyps and intestinal cancer cells.
