2,2-Dihydroxy-1-phenylethanone is a phenolic compound that is used as a starting material for the synthesis of other compounds. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group and subsequent dehydration. Trifluoroacetic acid is often used as an activated form of acid in this reaction. 2,2-Dihydroxy-1-phenylethanone has been used in gravimetric analysis, reaction time, and cycle analysis methods with advances in these techniques. This molecule has also been shown to be useful in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles.
