It can be used as a corrosion inhibitor in microelectronics and is also used in the ring-opening reaction in organic synthesis. 3,3'-Dimethoxybenzyl has been shown to inhibit the hydrolysis of epoxides and imidazoles. The crystal structure of 3,3'-dimethoxybenzil was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis and found to be monoclinic with an angle of approximately 90° between the two axes. ; The molecule can exist in different polymorphic forms depending on temperature and solvent conditions. 3,3'-Dimethoxybenzyl has been shown to have antioxidant properties due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide radicals.
