5-Decyne is a functional group with the structure of an alkene. It can be synthesized by reacting boron trifluoride etherate with a terminal alkyne in the presence of silicon and hexane. 5-Decyne has been shown to react with chloride in vitro to give the product 5-decynoyl chloride, which is a useful reagent for organic synthesis. The kinetic and spectrometric properties of 5-decyne have been studied using a cytochrome P450 in vitro method. This functional group also has zwitterionic properties, which are characterized by its ability to act as both an acid or base depending on pH. The mass spectrum of 5-decyne consists of m/z values ranging from 72 to 78, corresponding to molecular weights between 98 and 104 g/mol.
