5,6-Dichloronicotinonitrile is a metabolically positioned acceptor that has been shown to be an inhibitor of the P2Y12 receptor. It is structurally related to heterocycles such as oxazoles and ethyl esters, which are bioisosteres. 5,6-Dichloronicotinonitrile has been shown to have antiplatelet activity in vitro and in vivo. The compound is metabolized through two pathways: the first involves oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes and the second involves hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases.
