N,N-Dimethylhexadecylamine is a non-ionic surfactant that is used in detergent compositions. It is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be effective against bacteria and fungi. N,N-Dimethylhexadecylamine forms hydrogen bonds with the fatty acid chains of the cell membrane and disrupts the cellular membrane. This chemical can also react with zirconium oxide at high temperatures to form a strong inorganic acid that can dissolve metal oxides and other minerals. Dimethylhexadecylamine has been shown to have dose-dependent effects on amines, benzalkonium chloride, and inorganic acids.
