It aids in the removal of stains and dirt from clothing by lowering the surface tension of water. 3,4-Dimethylbenzophenone can be made by reacting dodecyl chloride with benzophenone under high salt conditions. The reaction mechanism for this process involves acylation of the aromatic hydrocarbon followed by a trifluoromethanesulfonic acid activation. The activated aromatic hydrocarbon then reacts with an acyl halide to form the desired product. 3,4-Dimethylbenzophenone is also used as a raw material for making other chemicals such as nitrobenzene and hydrogen chloride.
