Docosanoyl ethanolamide is a fatty acid amide. It is an alkanolamine that is used as a conditioning agent and viscosity enhancer in cosmetics. Docosanoyl ethanolamide has been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break down collagen in the skin, leading to wrinkles. It also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Docosanoyl ethanolamide has shown some efficacy against cellulose derivatives such as hydroxyapatite and glycol ester, which may be due to its functional groups that can act as chelating agents for calcium ions.
