It has been studied for its role in the maintenance of membrane fluidity and integrity. 1,3-Dipalmitoyl-glycero-2-phosphocholine is an amphiphilic molecule with a hydrophobic tail and two hydrophilic heads. The molecule can be found in two conformations: symmetric (transition) and asymmetric (thermotropic). The transition to the thermotropic phase occurs at a temperature of 37 °C, when the hydrated head group diffuses away from the hydrocarbon chain. This type of lipid bilayer structure enables it to form lamellar phases at ambient temperatures, which are required for many cellular processes.
