2,2'-Dichlorobenzil is an alkali metal that is soluble in organic solvents. It forms a white precipitate when treated with hydrochloric acid and a yellow solid when heated with acetonitrile. The chloride yields of 2,2'-dichlorobenzil are higher than those of sodium hypochlorite, which is commonly used as a disinfectant. This reaction can be achieved through the Friedel-Crafts reaction between 2,2'-dichlorobenzil and acetonitrile. 2,2'-Dichlorobenzil reacts with nitrate to form divinylbenzene. This compound has been analysed using anion analysis, which involves the use of bromoacetone as a reagent.
