3-Dimethylaminoacrolein (3DAA) is an alkylating agent that is structurally similar to acrolein. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of histone deacetylases, which are enzymes that remove acetyl groups from lysine residues in the N-terminal tails of histones. This leads to a structural modification of chromatin and the regulation of gene expression. 3DAA also induces caspase-independent cell death by alkylating DNA, forming adducts with guanine bases. The nature of 3DAA's reactivity makes this molecule a potential candidate for treatment of cancerous cells.
