It is an electron donor for the reduction of nitrite in vivo. 4,5-DHDMI has been shown to bind to magnesium ions and act as a binder for the treatment of fungal infections. In addition, 4,5-DHDMI can be used as an alternative treatment for osteoporosis. This drug has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to hypophosphite in the bacterial cell wall and preventing the formation of phosphotriester bonds with ATP.
