Descripción

Dapivirine is an antiviral drug of the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor class. It was developed for the potential treatment and prevention of HIV infection in humans by acting as a competitive inhibitor of the viral enzyme reverse transcriptase. This drug has been shown to have anti-HIV activity in vivo, and was found to be safe even at high doses in animals. Dapivirine is also active against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). The molecule was originally synthesized in 1979, but it took until 2006 before it was approved for human clinical trials. In vitro studies show that dapivirine inhibits the transcriptional regulation of HIV-1 LTR and prevents replication of HIV-1 RNA.
