Desfuroyl ceftiofur is a β-lactam antibiotic that has a wide spectrum of activity against bacteria. It is effective for the treatment of respiratory infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections. Desfuroyl ceftiofur is also used to treat mastitis in dairy cattle. The efficacy of desfuroyl ceftiofur has been demonstrated in clinical studies and in studies on laboratory animals. The bactericidal activity of desfuroyl ceftiofur can be attributed to its inhibition of the synthesis of bacterial cell wall mucopeptides, which are essential for bacterial growth. Desfuroyl ceftiofur binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on bacterial cell walls by competitive inhibition and inhibits the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
