Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that is used to treat depression. It is metabolized by the liver into (R)-desmethyl citalopram, which has about twice the potency of the parent drug and can be detected in human serum using a fluorescence detector. Citalopram has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties such as a high volume of distribution and a low clearance rate. It also has significant drug interactions with drugs such as erythromycin, ketoconazole, and cimetidine. This drug may cause an increase in body mass index due to its effect on appetite regulation.
