Desmethyl nizatidine is a proton pump inhibitor that inhibits the production of gastric acid by blocking the hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) in the parietal cells of the stomach. This drug has been shown to increase the elimination rate of proton pump inhibitors and may be used to treat patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. The oral bioavailability of desmethyl nizatidine is low, with a plasma protein binding of 98%. Desmethyl nizatidine has also been shown to affect gastric pH and inhibit acid secretion, which may be due to its ability to block H2 receptors.
