N-Desmethyl paroxol is a piperidine that can be used in the treatment of depression. It is an acidic compound that is soluble in water and hydrochloric acid. N-Desmethyl paroxol has a hydroxyl group at the 2 position of the piperidine ring, which allows it to react with serotonin by an exchange reaction. The drug inhibits serotonin reuptake, thereby increasing levels of serotonin available for neurotransmission. The physicochemical properties of N-Desmethyl paroxol allow it to be separated from impurities using chromatography and hydrochloric acid as a reaction solution. This active form also undergoes dehydrating reactions and may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or headache.
