Despropylene gatifloxacin is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of fluoroquinolones. It has strong antibacterial activity, with a bactericidal effect against a wide spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Gatifloxacin is metabolized by the liver into despropylenetetrahydroquinoline (DPHQ), which has been shown to have antibacterial activity in laboratory studies. DPHQ binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Despropylene gatifloxacin is used primarily in the treatment of respiratory tract infections and skin infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria.
