2,6-Dichloropyrazine is a nitrogenous compound with two chlorine atoms. It is a nucleophilic reagent that reacts with amines to form pyrazines. The reaction proceeds by the formation of an intermolecular hydrogen bond and nucleophilic substitution at the 2 position of the pyrazine ring. The reaction can be performed in the presence of sodium hydroxide solution or hydrochloric acid. The product can also be purified by recrystallization from water or ethyl acetate.
2,6-Dichloropyrazine can be synthesized by reacting trifluoroacetic acid with ammonia and chlorinating the resulting intermediate with chlorine gas.
