Dicyclohexyl ketone is a synthetic chemical used in organic chemistry as a solvent and reaction medium. It is soluble in carbon disulphide, but insoluble in water. The molecule contains two carbonyl groups, one hydroxyl group, and an aromatic hydrocarbon ring. The compound absorbs ultraviolet radiation that then causes the release of light at wavelengths between 320-380 nm. This emission can be detected by a diode. Dicyclohexyl ketone reacts with many organic compounds to form reaction products that are useful for organic synthesis because they contain carbon-carbon bonds or nitrogen-containing groups. Dicyclohexyl ketone is also used to synthesize methyl ethyl ketones from alkenes and acetone via the Wolff-Kishner reduction reaction.
