Progesterone is a hormone that has multiple functions in females during their reproductive cycle. It is an important component of the female reproductive system, and it is mainly synthesized by the corpus luteum of the ovary. Progesterone is also found in other tissues, including cardiac tissue, brain, skin, and endometrium. In addition to its role as a progestin in hormonal contraception and as a treatment for menorrhagia and endometrial cancer, progesterone has been used as an antidepressant treatment to prevent postpartum depression. Progesterone can be synthesized from cholesterol or pregnenolone through two pathways: the side-chain cleavage pathway or the C-21 pathway.
