Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) is a polypeptide hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells. EPO consists of 153 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 16,133 Da. The recombinant form is expressed in Escherichia coli, yeast, or other suitable host cells. The protein may be modified by pegylation with polyethylene glycol to increase the half-life in the body and prevent renal clearance. Recombinant human erythropoietin has been shown to enhance phase liquid chromatography separation techniques for analyzing peptides and proteins. Tryptic cleavage is also used to analyze the sequence of recombinant human erythropoietin.
