It is a powerful inhibitor of protein synthesis. 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene binds to the DNA polymerase enzyme and blocks the incorporation of nucleotides into the growing DNA strand. This prevents the synthesis of proteins from DNA templates, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The compound also inhibits inflammation by blocking the production of prostaglandins.
