N-Dodecylimidazole is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria and viruses by disrupting the fatty acid synthesis. It has been shown to induce necrotic cell death, which can be prevented by treating with antioxidants such as N-acetylcysteine or glutathione. N-Dodecylimidazole can also be used to study the role of fatty acids in viral replication and hemolytic activity. The compound has been shown to have a high degree of efficacy against solid tumours. N-Dodecylimidazole is a promising anticancer drug because it induces lysis of cells in tissue culture, including b16 mouse melanoma cells, and solid tumours.
