L-DOPA is a catecholamine that is used as a drug to treat Parkinson's disease. It is a precursor of dopamine, which is synthesized in the brain and transported to the nerve endings where it acts as a neurotransmitter. L-DOPA is also used as an active substance in many clinical tests, including assays for tumor diseases, dopaminergic drugs and affinity measurements.
