It has been shown to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mitochondria by catalyzing the oxidation of hydrogen fluoride to water and hydrogen peroxide. Trans-4,5-Dihydroxy-1,2-dithiane also has high values for disulfide bond and functionalities. This compound can be used in transfer reactions as well as redox potentials. It also has diagnostic properties for mitochondrial membrane potential.
