3,5-Dibromo-2,6-dimethylpyridine is a heterocyclic compound that can be used as a synthetic intermediate for cross coupling reactions. It is prepared by the reaction of formamide with nitrite and sodium hydroxide solution in an organic chemistry laboratory. The use of formic acid and ammonium formate as catalysts allow for the preparation of 3,5-dibromo-2,6-dimethylpyridine via a Suzuki reaction. This product has been found to contain traces of impurities such as 2,4-dichlorobenzene and 4-chloroaniline. These impurities are known to be carcinogenic or toxic to living organisms.
