Dicyclopentadiene is an insoluble polymer that is stabilized with BHT. It has been shown to be a good candidate for use in thermal expansion applications. Dicyclopentadiene undergoes a reaction with sodium and carbonate to form sodium dicyclopentadiene and sodium carbonate, which are both soluble in water. The reaction mechanism for this process is the addition of hydrogenated, dibutyltin oxide-stabilized microcapsules of dicyclopentadiene to the solution containing sodium and carbonate, followed by heating to 100°C. This reaction occurs spontaneously without the need for any additional catalysts.
