N,N'-Di-n-butylurea is a carbonyl group that is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. It can be prepared by reacting an amine with carbonic acid in the presence of piperonyl butoxide. N,N'-Di-n-butylurea is also used in the preparation of polymer films for chromatographic separation and as a reaction vessel for reactions involving fatty acids. The reaction mechanism of N,N'-Di-n-butylurea is not well understood, but it has been shown to react with amines to form urea derivatives which are less viscous than the original amines.
