The synthesis of 3,5-difluoro-4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde is an efficient and high yielding process. In the first step, n-fluorobenzenesulfonimide reacts with pyridine in a transmetallation reaction to give the corresponding difluorinated pyridine. The difluorinated pyridine is then reacted with difluoroethanal to give 3,5-difluoro-4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde. The yield of this reaction is approximately 95%. This reaction can be carried out at low temperatures (0°C) and can be used to produce the target compound in large quantities.
