2-(2,5-Dibromophenyl)acetic acid is a chiral compound that can be synthesized by the chloromethylation of 2-(2,5-dichlorophenyl)acetic acid with chlorosulfonic acid and sodium hydroxide. It has been shown to be effective against hepatitis C virus (HCV). The enantioselective synthesis of the racemic mixture of 2-(2,5-dibromophenyl)acetic acid was achieved using an asymmetric synthesis involving the reaction of paraformaldehyde and cuprous cyanide in the presence of dibromobenzene. This reagent is then reacted with hydrochloric acid to form 2-(2,5-dibromophenyl)acetic acid.
