It is used in the treatment of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting cell proliferation. 2,3-Dichlorobenzonitrile also inhibits the growth of other cells such as nerve cells, by blocking the action of specific molecules that are involved in cell division. This compound can be used to treat leukemia and lymphoma. 2,3-Dichlorobenzonitrile binds with amines and caffeine molecules to form an adduct that is toxic to cells. The functional groups on the molecule are responsible for this interaction.
