2,6-Dimethylbenzyl bromide is a bioactive compound that belongs to the group of reactive sulfides. It can be used for desulfurization and decarboxylation reactions. It has been shown in an assay on rat liver microsomes that 2,6-dimethylbenzyl bromide is able to react with sulfoxides, carboxylates and amino groups in an acylase-catalysed reaction to form corresponding sulfones, carboxylic acids and amines. This process also requires magnesium ions as a cofactor. The product can be valorized by dehydration of the sulfone or carboxylic acid.
