2,5-Dithiobiurea is an organic compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to have biological activity against HL-60 cells and to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. 2,5-Dithiobiurea is a substrate for the formation of thin films with sodium salts. The film inhibits the growth of microorganisms by preventing oxygen from reaching them. The toxicity of 2,5-dithiobiurea may be due to its ability to form metal chelates with transition metals such as copper and zinc. These chelates can bind to DNA and inhibit DNA synthesis. 2,5-Dithiobiurea also inhibits follicular growth in vivo by inhibiting the production of estrogen hormones, which are involved in this process.
