Diaminomaleonitrile binds to the phosphate groups on DNA by steric interactions with the phosphate groups on the enzyme DNA gyrase. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex required for ATP synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis.
