The addition of methyl groups in the 2,5-dimethylstyrene molecule leads to trisubstituted styrenes. The 2,5-dimethylstyrene molecule has been shown to be antigenic and can act as an immunogen for antibody production. The 2,5-dimethylstyrene molecule has been used in barcode technology as a way of identifying specific monomers. This is done by attaching phosphates onto the polymer backbone which can be detected using an immunoassay.
