2,4-Difluorobenzonitrile is an electron deficient compound that has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in mice. 2,4-Difluorobenzonitrile binds to the chaperone protein Hsp90 and prevents it from binding to other proteins. This leads to the inhibition of Hsp90’s function as a molecular chaperone. The x-ray crystal structure of 2,4-difluorobenzonitrile has been determined and it was found that this molecule is a rigid planar molecule with substantial steric interactions. This inhibition of Hsp90 may also lead to the inhibition of estrogen production by aromatase, which is an enzyme that converts androstenedione into estrone and testosterone into estradiol. The reaction products of 2,4-difluorobenzonitrile are chloride ions, which have been shown to have antitumor effects when used in conjunction with ion
