3,4-Dimethylphenylboronic acid is the parent chemical compound of the class of antiviral agents known as allosteric inhibitors. 3,4-Dimethylphenylboronic acid has been shown to inhibit the activity of viral enzymes that are involved in the replication cycle. This chemical has been shown to be synergistic with other antiviral agents such as ribavirin, which inhibits viral protein synthesis by blocking a different enzyme. The potency of 3,4-dimethylphenylboronic acid is due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with nucleophilic groups on nucleosides and nucleotide analogues. These bonds are formed by an unsymmetrical boron atom and a methyl group.
