The molecule is formed by the reaction of sodium carbonate with benzene in the presence of water. The compound has a redox potential that is close to zero, which makes it a reducing agent and an excellent hydrogen donor. The compound is soluble in water and has been shown to inhibit plant growth as well as promote plant growth by acting as a growth regulator. This molecule has also been shown to be fluorescent.
